How to shop for a mattress without getting upsold: a first-timer's checklist

Short answer: decide your size first, find out what your bed needs underneath it, set a budget for the whole setup, and lie on each mattress for 10 to 15 minutes in the position you really sleep in. Then ask a few plain questions about price, delivery, and returns before you pay. At our Elk Grove warehouse, brand new mattress sets start at $100 for a twin and $150 for a queen.

A plain checklist for your first mattress, or your first one in a long time.

Published October 22, 2026 · By Brian Williams, owner of Elk Grove Mattress & Furniture

A lot of people walk into a mattress store having no idea what they need, and that's exactly when it's easy to spend more than you planned. Brian and Vik have helped over 10,000 customers since we opened in 2020, and the shoppers who leave happiest usually did a little homework first. Here's the checklist we'd give a friend.

1. Pick your size before you shop

Size drives price more than almost anything else, so settle it first. Standard sizes in the US are:

SizeAboutUsually fits
Twin38 x 75 inKids' rooms, bunk beds, small guest rooms
Full54 x 75 inOne teen or adult who wants more room
Queen60 x 80 inMost couples and most master bedrooms
King76 x 80 inCouples who want space, kids or pets who climb in

Measure the bedroom and leave a comfortable walkway around the bed so you can open doors and drawers. Our mattress size guide goes deeper if you're torn between two sizes.

2. Know what goes under it

This is where first-time buyers get surprised. A mattress needs something to hold it up: a box spring or foundation on a bed frame, a platform bed, or an adjustable base. Before you come in, check what you already have at home. If your frame is in good shape, you may not need a new one. If your old box spring sags or squeaks, don't put a new mattress on it. Not sure? Read Do I need a box spring?

We carry bed frames, box springs, and adjustable bases, so you can get the whole bed in one stop. But only buy the pieces your setup actually needs.

3. Set a budget for the whole setup

Write down one number for everything: the mattress, anything it sits on, and getting it home. Then shop inside that number. Here's where our brand new mattress sets start:

  • Twin set: $100
  • Full set: $140
  • Queen set: $150
  • King set: $275

Ask us exactly what comes with the set you choose. Curious what that price range really buys? See what a $100 to $275 set gets you, or browse our mattresses page.

4. Test it the right way

  1. Lie down for 10 to 15 minutes on each one you're serious about. A quick sit on the edge tells you almost nothing.
  2. Use your real sleep position. Side, back, or stomach. Side sleepers often want more cushion at the shoulders and hips; back and stomach sleepers often want firmer support.
  3. Roll over a few times. Notice how easy it is to move and whether anything pokes or sinks.
  4. Bring your partner. If you share a bed, lie down together and have one person roll over.
  5. Wear comfortable clothes. You'll be lying down more than you think.

Don't trust the firmness label alone. "Medium" from one maker can feel like "firm" from another. Your back will tell you more than the tag.

5. Questions that keep you from overspending

  • What exactly comes with this set?
  • Do I actually need this add-on? If someone suggests something extra, ask what it does and whether your bed needs it. "No, thanks" is a fine answer.
  • Is it in stock? We usually have lots of stock, so what you lie on is often what goes home with you.
  • When can it be delivered, and is setup included?
  • What happens to my old mattress?
  • What if it doesn't feel right? We don't offer comfort returns, but select mattresses come with a sleep trial, so ask which models qualify before you buy.

Still deciding between foam, hybrid, and coil? Mattress types explained covers how each one feels.

6. Plan how it gets home

We make about 40 deliveries a month, same day, next day, or same week. The crew brings the mattress in and sets it up where you want it. Prefer to take it yourself? Curbside pickup works too. We can also haul away your old mattress, so mention it when you schedule. See the delivery page for the areas we cover.

Questions people ask us

How long should I lie on a mattress before buying it?

Give each one you are serious about at least 10 to 15 minutes. Lie in the position you actually sleep in, roll over a couple of times, and if you share a bed, test it together.

What do I need besides the mattress?

Something to hold it up. That might be a box spring or foundation on a bed frame, a platform bed, or an adjustable base. Tell us what you already have at home and we will tell you what you do and do not need.

How much does a mattress set cost at your Elk Grove store?

Brand new mattress sets start at $100 for a twin, $140 for a full, $150 for a queen, and $275 for a king. Stop in or call (916) 585-3613 to see what is on the floor.

What size mattress should a first-time buyer get?

For one adult in a normal bedroom or for most couples, a queen is the usual pick. A queen mattress is about 60 by 80 inches. A twin or full suits a kid's room or a single sleeper, and a king gives a couple the most room if the bedroom can fit it.

Can I return a mattress if I don't like it?

We do not offer comfort returns, but select mattresses come with a sleep trial. Ask which models qualify before you buy.

Do you deliver and set up the mattress?

Yes. We deliver same day, next day, or same week, bring it in, and set it up. Curbside pickup works too, and we can haul away your old mattress, so ask about it when you schedule.
