Twin, full, queen, or king? Picking a size

Short answer: a queen fits most couples and most rooms, a king gives two sleepers the most space, and a twin or full suits kids, guests, and single sleepers. At our Elk Grove store, sets run twin $100, full $140, queen $150, and king $275, with same-day, next-day, or same-week delivery.

"What size should I get?" is the question we hear most in our showroom. It comes down to who sleeps on it, room size, and budget. Here's how the four sizes compare.

The four sizes side by side

SizeStandard dimensionsSets at our store start at
TwinAbout 38" × 75"$100
FullAbout 54" × 75"$140
QueenAbout 60" × 80"$150
KingAbout 76" × 80"$275

Dimensions are the usual U.S. standard sizes. Measure your bed frame or room before you come in, because a few inches matter more than you'd think.

Twin

A twin is the go-to for a kid's room, a bunk bed, or a small guest room. It's narrow, so it isn't a good fit for two adults, and some taller adults will find the 75-inch length a little short.

Full

A full is a step up in width for one sleeper who wants room to spread out, like a teenager or a single adult in a smaller bedroom. Two people can share one, but each gets roughly the width of a crib mattress, so most couples end up wanting a queen.

Queen

The queen is the most popular size for a reason. It fits most master bedrooms and guest rooms, gives a couple enough space, and is long enough for most adults. If you're not sure, a queen is usually the safe choice, and our queen sets start at $150.

King

A king is the same length as a queen but about 16 inches wider. That's a big difference if you share the bed with a partner, kids who climb in, or a dog. It needs a larger room, so measure first. King sets at our store start at $275.

A quick way to decide

  • One child or a small guest room: twin.
  • One adult or teen who wants more room: full.
  • A couple, or one adult in a normal-size bedroom: queen.
  • A couple who wants space, or a bigger master bedroom: king.
  • Leave a comfortable walkway around the bed so you can make it and open drawers and doors.

Thinking about an adjustable base?

We also carry adjustable bases. If you're considering one, mention it when you pick a size so we can show you what pairs with the mattress you like. Our owner Brian answers whether an adjustable base is worth it, and the price range and levels are in the adjustable base section of the mattress page.
