Mattresses for back pain
There is no single mattress that fixes back pain, and we don't make medical claims. What helps most shoppers is lying on several firmness levels in person and picking the one that keeps you comfortable. Brand new mattress sets here are twin $100, full $140, queen $150, and king $275.

If you have ongoing back pain, talk to your doctor or physical therapist first. This guide is about shopping, not treatment.
What to pay attention to
- Firmness you like. Comfort is personal; try soft, medium, and firm.
- Your sleep position. Side, back, and stomach sleepers often prefer different feels, so test in the position you actually sleep in.
- Support from the base. A sagging old foundation or frame can make any mattress feel worse. Read do I need a box spring.
- Age of your current mattress. See how long a mattress lasts.
Test it in the showroom
Lie down for several minutes on each mattress you're considering. We don't offer comfort returns, and only select mattresses have a sleep trial, so ask which ones before you buy. Testing in person is the best way to choose.
Some people like an adjustable base for raising the head or feet. Adjustable bases run $400 to $1,400 and are sold separately; see is an adjustable base worth it.
