Sofa buying guide: size, fabric, and what $400 gets you

Short answer: our sofas start at $400 at our Elk Grove warehouse, and you can sit on them before you buy. Measure your wall and doorways first, pick a fabric that fits how your house really lives (kids, pets, movie nights), and ask us whether a sofa, a loveseat, or a recliner fits the room best.

A plain guide to picking a sofa that fits your room, your family, and your budget.

Published October 19, 2026 · By Brian Williams, owner of Elk Grove Mattress & Furniture

A sofa gets used every single day, so it's worth a few minutes of planning before you buy one. Brian and Vik have helped over 10,000 customers since we opened in 2020, and most sofa regrets come down to three things: it didn't fit the room, the fabric didn't hold up to the household, or it was the wrong kind of seat for how the family actually sits.

What a sofa costs here

Sofas at our store start at $400, and sectionals start at $500. Loveseat and recliner prices depend on the piece. The final price comes down to size, style, and fabric, so the easiest way to see what fits your budget is to come in and sit on a few. We usually have lots of stock, but pieces sell fast, so call (916) 585-3613 to ask what's on the floor right now, or browse our furniture page.

Step 1: Get the size right

  1. Measure the wall where the sofa will go. Leave some open space on each side so the room doesn't feel packed.
  2. Leave walking room. A common rule of thumb is about 2.5 to 3 feet of clear walkway around furniture, plus some room between the seat and the coffee table.
  3. Tape it out. Mark the outline on the floor with painter's tape. If it feels too big taped out, it will feel too big in the room.
  4. Check the way in. Measure the width and height of your front door, hallways, and any stair turns. Ask us for the sofa's measurements and we'll compare them with yours.

Bring your measurements or a phone photo of the room when you come in. We'll help you match a sofa to the space before you buy.

Step 2: Pick a fabric for how you really live

  • Kids and spills: tightly woven fabrics and darker colors hide everyday wear better than light, loose weaves.
  • Pets: loose or loopy weaves can snag on claws. Smooth surfaces are easier to wipe down and brush hair off.
  • Leather-look finishes: wipe clean fast, which is why a lot of families with little ones like them.
  • Soft, plush fabrics: feel great for lounging and movie nights, and they're a good pick for a quieter room that gets less traffic.

Not every sofa on the floor comes in every fabric, so ask us what each one is covered in and how it holds up.

Step 3: Sofa, loveseat, or recliner?

  • Sofa: the everyday main seat, and a good fit when a sectional would crowd the room. If you have a big family or a big room, compare it with our sectional sizes and prices guide.
  • Loveseat: adds seating without taking over a small room. Many customers pair a sofa with a loveseat.
  • Recliner: gives one person a spot to put their feet up. Reclining seats need extra space behind or in front when they lean back, so measure for that too.

Step 4: Sit on it before you buy

Pictures can't tell you how deep the seat is, how firm the cushions feel, or whether your feet touch the floor. Sit the way you sit at home: lean back, put your feet up, and try the middle seat too. Everything on our floor is in the same showroom as the mattresses, so you can shop the living room and the bedroom in one trip.

Delivery, setup, and your old couch

We deliver same day, next day, or same week, and the crew brings the sofa in and places it where you want it. Prefer to take it yourself? Curbside pickup works too. See the delivery page for the areas we cover. We also haul away old couches, so ask about it when you schedule, the same way we handle old mattress haul-away.

Questions people ask us

How much does a sofa cost at your Elk Grove store?

Our sofas start at $400, and sectionals start at $500. The final price depends on size, style, and fabric, so stop in or call (916) 585-3613 and we will show you what fits your budget.

What size sofa should I get?

Measure the wall it will sit against and leave some open space on each side. A common rule of thumb is about 2.5 to 3 feet of clear walkway around furniture. Taping the outline on the floor is the easiest way to check before you buy.

What sofa fabric is best with kids and pets?

Tightly woven fabrics, darker colors, and smooth leather-look surfaces are usually easier to wipe down and hide everyday wear. Loose weaves can snag on claws. Ask us what each sofa on the floor is covered in and we will tell you how it holds up.

Should I get a sofa, a loveseat, or a recliner?

A sofa is the main seat in most living rooms. A loveseat adds seating without crowding a small room, and a recliner gives one person a spot to put their feet up. Many customers pair a sofa with a loveseat.

Do you deliver and set up sofas?

Yes. We deliver same day, next day, or same week and bring the sofa in and set it up where you want it. Curbside pickup works too if you would rather take it yourself.

Can you take my old couch away?

Yes, we haul away old couches. Ask about it when you schedule delivery and we will go over the details for your order.
